What advice have you been given when you are faced with conflict? Do any of these typical statements sound familiar to you?
“Don’t let it bother you”
“Leave it alone, it will go away”
“Turn the other cheek”
“Don’t rock the boat”
“Don’t be a nag”
“It’s not your problem”
Of course we have all been given the opposite advice as well:
“Just straighten him out”
“Tell her exactly what you think of her”
“Smarten him up before it gets out of hand”
“Don’t put up with that …”
As a result of this well meaning advice, we’ve learned only two ways to deal with conflict – fight or flight – aggressive or passive. Needless to say, neither way has worked well for us. In fact most of us are on a conflict pendulum – swinging back and forth from the extremes.
Explore a balanced approach to dealing with conflict. Understand the conflict spectrum from problem analysis to method and approach through risk management and alternative techniques ending with solutions and results.
